MTB Navigation Event - Free for Whaka100 Entrants
Paid Entry Available for OBOP Members and Public
- Mountain Bike Navigation event in Rotorua CBD, based around the Government Gardens/Sulphur Flat area.
- Competitors will be given a map, and must visit 20 checkpoints in any order, starting and finishing in the designated Start/Finish area.
- Each checkpoint is worth 5 points, so the idea is to collect all 20 checkpoints worth a total of 100 points (The "100" Rogaine), in as short a time as possible.
- No time limit, but the fastest riders can expect to take approx 40 minutes to complete the course.
- This event is aimed at individuals rather than teams, and there are no specified classes. It is intended to offer a taster of mountain bike orienteering and give those people entered in the Whaka100 a short fun warm up competition ahead of the main Whaka 100 races. It also provides an opportunity for a warm up event for those people planning to enter other MTB orienteering events later in the year, including the NZ MTBO Championships in November.
LOCATION
- Registration will now be on the lawn outside the Rotorua Arts Village. 1240 Hinemaru Street
- The Start/Finish is also based at this location.
TIMETABLE - THURSDAY 20TH OCTOBER 2022
- Registration - open from 4.00pm. Competitors will be given a map and instructions on getting to the Start/Finish location
- Start - competitors can start anytime between 4.00pm - 5.30pm
- Finish - competitors can take as long as they like to visit 20 checkpoints, but must be completed before course closure time of 7.00pm.
- All competitors must download and hand in their SPORTident card/dibber at the finish location, even if they have not completed the course.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
- Bike, helmet and suitable clothing. A mapboard which attaches to your handlebars is very useful. If you don't have a mapboard a small number of OBOP ones will be available to borrow on the day - first in first dibs. You can also fashion an improvised mapboard such as this if you are keen: mapboard (singletrack.org.nz), or; Make your own Map Board - Adventure Sport NQ
- The event will be on roads and park areas open to the public. As such normal safety rules apply, with special care taken to avoid collisions with other competitors and members of the public. Usual traffic rules apply when travelling on city roads.

SPORTIDENT TIMING SYSTEM
- We will be using SPORTident, an electronic timing system, which will produce results immediately after the event. To use the system you need a SPORTident card or dibber (SI Card for short), which you get issued at registration. This is then inserted into the timing box at each control to record your time, and is handed in at the finish where you will receive your results.
- It is important that everyone hands in their SI Cards even in the event of not finishing the course - this is to ensure we know people are off the course and safe, as well as getting our SI Cards back, which are costly to replace.
- Lost or damaged SI Cards may be charged for @$130 each.
