HILLCREST Event info - using MaprunnersF app and accessing map

The Hillcrest event starts from the end of Titoki Street in Hillcrest. Because we are using an app called MaprunnerF, you can run it anytime over the next week. We have maps printed out which you can pick up from 18 Nikau St (Erin and Paul Billings place) - they have an open (no door) bike shed to the right of the house where couriers always leave/pick up parcels and maps will be left there in a box. You can also download a copy of the map here if you want.

The app we are using is called MaprunnerF, and instructions for this are here. It requires a smart phone to work, so you may want to put your phone in a plastic bag or dry bag to protect it – especially if it is raining. It is also worth noting that some route choices may take people across a stream, so there is risk of getting a little wet if you choose that option – note however that using a phone is your responsibility and the club cannot be held responsible for phones getting damaged (they should be fine but just in case).
Once you have downloaded the MaprunnerF app and arrive at the event start, the app will ask for a 4 digit code to access the event – the code is 4342. Once you hit the “go to start” button on the app, and arrive at the start location, it will register your start and your time will start then.

Note we will not be using our normal orienteering flags at each control site, and instead your phone will register arrival at each site. There is orange tape on some of the sites around the park, but not all sites. If you get to the site and your phone doesn’t register the control, you may need to move around the location a little until the GPS picks up your signal. Our test run of the course using Maprunner however was pretty good and the controls registered in the correct locations pretty much. Note the points for the event programmed into the Maprunner Ap are 20 points per control and 10 points penalty for each minute (or part of) late. This is different to what is written on the map, so ignore the points information on the map.

If you wish to run the event without using your smart phone you are welcome to, however your run will be unofficial and not included in results.

Obviously we are still under COVID19 level 2 restrictions, so please practice social distancing and good hygiene etc.  A copy of the OBOP COVID19 practices is available on the website here: http://www.obop.org.nz/obops-covid-19-response-plan.html.

After the event we’d welcome any feedback that could help us run it better. We have more events coming up as well, so a chance to make improvements if need be. Thanks!
